Playstation 4 announcement

Sony finally announced their next gen console, the PS4, on Wednesday 20/02 after months of speculation. Earlier, photos of what people suspected was the new controller circulated the internet and yours truly felt the excitement building.

Sony may have disappointed many by not revealing the actual console, but at least we got to see the controller. It looks like a PS3 controller with a few new additions. A touch pad on top of the controller will give players new ways of interacting with the games. A share button will allow you to instantly share your playing with the rest of the world, thanks to the new cloud feature. Finally a sensor bar which will work together with the new Playstation camera to provide features like the PS Move, Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect.
Although the announcement may have been a bit long and tedious (see the full two hour video at the end of this post), the games for the new console should be enough to please most gamers. The usual suspects were there in Activision, Ubisoft and Square Enix, but Sony surprised by bringing Blizzard and Bungie on stage as well. Ubisoft presented more gameplay footage from Watch Dogs and I must say it looks spectacular.

Square Enix happily showed off their new Luminous Engine, which they will be using to create games for the next gen consoles. Although they weren't presenting a new game they gave everyone a sneak peak of what they wanted their games on the PS4 to look like in the form of a short video.

Blizzard gladly shared that they're bringing Diablo III to Playstation. There will be a version for PS3 and also one for the upcoming PS4 console. Blizzard has roots as a creator of console games and they seemed very excited to be bringing their games back to this format.

Bungie announced their new game, Destiny, a first-person shooter. Being a Playstation man, I've never played much Halo, but I've always wanted to, so Bungie confirming that Destiny will be released on Playstation as well was probably the most exciting news of the whole PS4 announcement.

All in all a good presentation, but I think everyone was left feeling a bit cheated as Sony didn't unveil the actual console. They did not reveal the release date either, only giving us a vague holiday 2013 timeframe.  That being said, I was happy with the things that were announced. A lot of good-looking games I'm psyched to see more of.
